The Hidden Meaning

My new logo is live on my site! I really wanted to design and create my own logo, so I put it off until I got the opportunity to learn enough graphic design to do so. Here is what I came up with:

I am a sucker for symbolism and wanted my design to be original and unique. I also wanted it to have the flexibility of meaning something to not only me, but all of my potential clients–the individuals, couples, and families I photograph. So, I created a logo design that has, what I’ll call, multi-meaning to it.

For myself, the hands symbolize a handcrafted and personalized touch to my work. I see them as being my own, folded in prayer. My idea of two hands actually came from researching my personality type and bringing awareness to two of my weaknesses in particular. According to the Myers Briggs personality test, I fall under the “campaigner (ENFP)” personality type (If you’ve never taken the test before, I can’t recommend it enough). While the free version gives a generous amount of insight, I may or may not have splurged and bought into the $30 analysis... it was totally worth it! It’s not very often that I’ll come across a 200-page profile analysis that will captivate my attention in one sitting!

Anyway, each hand represents a lesser quality my personality type is inclined, but not confined to struggling with. While nobody likes to admit their weaknesses, we all have them. Becoming aware of them is the first step toward making sure they don’t get the best of us. I believe that it’s through prayer that God begins to work in us to help reveal and transform our weaknesses into strengths. When I look at my logo I am humbly reminded of my weaknesses, and great need to depend on God to help me defy the odds of them in their attempts to hinder my growth.

For individuals, the hands could symbolize a spiritual interpretation, or a feeling of friendship. My coupled-clients, could view them as being intimately clasped, showing a desire to be hand-in-hand with someone for life. And, clients with families, may perceive them as portraying a strong sense of togetherness. Most people probably won’t think this deeply about my logo, but I love the idea of having infused meaning hidden below the surface. God works in a similar way. Everything God has created, whether we notice or not, carries purpose.

The flowers in the design are called Forget-Me-Not flowers. I wanted to be sure to incorporate flowers that were native to where I grew up, in Minnesota. To my surprise, the name of these flowers turned out to mean even more to me than their origin. Turns out there is an old Christian lore story centered around these flowers and a legend for lovers too. Both stories seem to portray a theme of true love, and eternal remembrance. The really cool thing is that I didn’t even realize how relevant the symbolism behind these flowers were to my business until I finished my design!

What Does the Forget Me Not Flower Mean?

  • True and undying love

  • Remembrance during partings or after death

  • A connection that lasts through time

  • Fidelity and loyalty in a relationship, despite separation or other challenges

  • Reminders of your favorite memories or time together with another person

  • Growing affection between two people

  • Caring for the poor, disabled, and needy

The phrase Forget-Me-Not also carries with it a personal heart cry to the Lord. While God never abandons us, we all go through seasons of life where we feel forgotten. A blog post I found explains it well; “It’s not that God is preoccupied; it’s just that our struggles make us feel like we’re facing the world alone. What is amazing is that we are given full permission to voice this honestly.” Crying out to God in lament is a common theme throughout the Psalms. It’s less of a reminder to God, and more of a reinforcement of Truths for believers. Here is a link to a beautifully written, and biblically supported, post that elaborates on the idea of reminding God to remember.

I believe that God will use each of us for His higher purposes to the extent that we decide to surrender to His will, laying down our worldly desires for His holy ones. In times of hardship especially, it’s important that we remind ourselves of God’s promises so that we can remain firm in our faith. If we just make ourselves available, God will make us able. Each time we commune with God through prayer, we are strengthening our relationship with Him, creating a deeper sense of trust, respectively. The more faithful we are to God, the greater the works He can do through us. My heart’s cry is to remain faithful to Him, always remembering His promises, so my calling can be lived out for His Glory.

I designed this logo because I want my clients to know that my heart and soul goes into my work. While there are plenty of photographers to choose from, I promise to always put forth my best work, striving to provide clients with photos they’ll treasure of memories and moments that deserve to be preserved, protected, and remembered.
